Although light on the updates (an all-new model is not far away), the 'new' Wrangler brings improved fuel consumption, and a sub-$30,000 starting point.
As before, the 2012 Wrangler range includes short-wheelbase Wrangler Sport and Rubicon variants, as well as the long-wheelbase Wrangler Unlimited, also available in Sport and Rubicon grades.
Except for the Rubicon, all variants offer the choice of the new 3.6 litre petrol V6, or the carried-over 2.8-litre CRD turbodiesel, with either a five speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission.
Producing 209kW at 6350rpm and 347Nm from 4300rpm, the new 3.6 litre Pentastar engine replaces the Wrangler's previous 146kW/315Nm 3.8 litre engine.
Paired with the standard-fit six-speed manual transmission, the petrol engine lists fuel consumption figures of 8.7 l/100km in two-door form, and 8.9 for the four-door.
Matched to the newer five-speed automatic - which replaces the four-speed auto of last year's model - fuel use is listed at 8.8 l/100km for the two-door and 9.1 in four-door form.
By comparison, fuel consumption for the outgoing 3.8 litre V6 varied from 10.4 to 11.9 l/100km, depending on the model.
With the new engine, the 0-100km/h sprint in the two-door Wrangler Sport, with the six-speed manual, is reduced from 11.2 seconds to a more fleet-footed 8.1 seconds.
Jeep says that the same car, with the five-speed auto, will cover the sprint in the same time.
The petrol engine is available across the range.
Still with the line-up in 2012 is the Wrangler's trusty Euro V-compliant 2.8 litre four-cylinder common-rail diesel, delivering 147kW at 3600rpm.
Torque is rated at 410Nm between 2200-2600rpm for the manual, and 460Nm between 1600-2600rpm for the auto.
Fuel consumption for the diesel is listed at 6.5 l/100km with the manual two-door, and 7.1 for the auto. In four-door form, the diesel returns 7.5 and 7.9 respectively.
The diesel engine is available with Sport variants only.
Standard goodies underneath the Wrangler include the part-time Command-Trac two-peed transfer case, live axles at both ends and long-travel coil spring suspension.
For the Rubicon, remote locking front and rear differentials are standard, along with electronically-disconnecting sway bars, and the stronger Rock-Trac transfer case.
Standard features across the Wrangler line-up include climate control, MP3-compatible audio system with six speakers and auxiliary connectivity, manual headlight levelling, and 17-inch aluminium wheels.
The Rubicon adds auto-on headlights, 17-inch cast aluminium wheels in Satin Carbon finish, and an Infinity seven-speaker audio system.
Depending on the variant, options include leather seats, colour-coded fender flares, UConnect phone connectivity (in Connectivity Group pack) and the 731N media centre with UConnect, CD/DVD/HDD and satellite navigation on a 6.5-inch touchscreen.
Safety features include multi-stage driver and front passenger air bags, ABS brakes with off-road calibration, electronic stability control, brake assist, all-speed traction control, electronic roll mitigation and brake locking differentials.
Hill-start assist is also standard, along with hill-descent control (auto only), tyre pressure monitoring, and engine immobiliser.
In the coming months, Jeep will add a new top-shelf Sahara trim grade to the Wrangler range, with standard features including 18-inch alloy wheels, leather upholstery, six-CD audio system, body-coloured three-piece hardtop and wheel arch flares.
