Kia’s midsized Optima range now has a plug-in hybrid variant for overseas markets, unveiled in the lead-up to the Chicago Auto Show.

Joining the new Niro hybrid SUV at the Kia stand, the Optima PHEV joins Kia’s “green car revolution”.

Power comes from a 2.0 litre four-cylinder petrol engine producing 115kW and 189Nm, matched with a six-speed automatic transmission.

The transmission incorporates a 50kW electric motor, which is powered by a 9.7kWh battery pack located behind the rear seat.

Kia says the battery pack can be fully-charged in less than three hours, and is capable of providing up to 43km of emissions-free driving from a full charge.

Regenerative braking can partly recharge the PHEV system while driving, and the electric range combined with a tank of fuel will take the Optima over 950km.

While part of the Optima range, the PHEV variant has come in for its own aerodynamic styling enhancements aimed at maximising fuel efficiency.

Changes include a rear diffuser, new front and rear bumpers, active grille slats and new alloy wheels.

Safety features include autonomous emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, active cruise control and lane departure warning, while general features include Android Auto and Apple CarPlay with voice recognition.

The 2016 Kia Optima Plug-In Hybrid will go on sale in the US, but Kia Australia’s Kevin Hepworth told TMR that the model is not currently on the radar for Australia.
