Launch of the RF (Retractable Folding roof) version coincided with Mazda introducing its i-ACTIVSENSE suite of safety technologies – including blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert - across the entire MX-5 range.
Not that the two-seat MX-5 sports car was lacking in that department with standard kit including four airbags, ABS anti-lock brakes, dynamic stability control, emergency brake assist , emergency stop signal, hill launch assist and traction control.
The folding hardtop RF model also boasts adaptive headlights.
Further, after its barrier testing ANCAP ranked the Mazda MX-5 as the best vehicle it has ever tested in the field of pedestrian safety. For that, Mazda points to the MX-5’s active bonnet which pops-up when an accident is detected (creating more deformable space between it and the engine), energy absorbing foam in the front bumper and a lower stiffener which prevents a pedestrian’s legs from sliding under the vehicle.
“From the outset we were confident that the Mazda MX-5 had the inbuilt proactive and active safety technology to earn the maximum rating, which is why we didn’t hesitate to crash test under the strict parameters of ANCAP,” revealed Mazda Australia’s Alastair Doak.
“We expected the five star rating would carry over to the all-new Mazda MX-5 RF, but, as we’ve done across most of the Mazda range in recent months, we were keen to introduce more safety technology for the benefit of our customers.”
