Audi's entry-level 'premium' hatch, the 2011 A1, has been awarded a 5-Star crash safety rating by the Australasian New Car Assessment Program's overseas sister organisation, Euro NCAP.

With its Volkswagen-badged sibling the 2010 Polo achieving ANCAP's top score earlier this year, and thanks to a cooperative agreement between ANCAP and Euro NCAP, the A1 is likely to achieve the same top score in Australia.

Fitted with Electronic Stability Control and six airbags as standard, it's a good chance.

Through its testing by Euro NCAP, the diminutive A1 achieved a score of 90% for adult occupant protection in frontal, rear and side impact collisions. Child protection was rated at 79%.

Frontal impact for the driver was marked as good or adequate depending on the regions of the body impacted, while passenger protection was marked as good in all areas except for the lower legs, where protection was described as adequate.
