Its not even here, and it?s barely over there yet, but that hasn?t stopped Volkswagen?s new Golf VI from being awarded a maximum five-star rating by the Euro NCAP (European New Car Assessment Programme) crash test agency.

It?s not a complete surprise, as anything less than a five-star rating would have seen the new model playing second fiddle to the current Mark V range (awarded its five-stars back in 2004). The all new Golf VI scored a mightily impressive, 36 out of a possible 37 points for occupant protection, leading to its five-star award. In the area of pedestrian safety, the new Golf scored an impressive 3 stars.

All of these points and stars add up to the new Golf being among the safest vehicles around, a claim that is made even more plausible when considering the safety features included as standard. A seven airbag package (including a knee airbag), Electronic Stabilisation Programme (ESP), Brake Assist, ABS, new whiplash reducing headrests, side impact protection and a stronger chassis structure than ever before, are all standard.

Furthermore, a new sensor concept for crash detection has been introduced with the Golf. The development of this so-called ?crash impact sound sensing? system was awarded the innovation prize in Bavaria in May 2008.

The new Golf Mk VI is currently on sale in Europe and although there is no official word, we can expect to see it arriving soon on these shores. We'll update you with specs and pricing when it does.
