As self-driving cars ever-so-slowly become the norm rather than the exception, carmakers are facing the challenges of ‘modernising’ car interiors to suit the new technology.
Volvo’s autonomous vehicle program is well underway, and the company has now unveiled a new driving interface called IntelliSafe Auto Pilot.
The Swedish carmaker says its new interface is “seamless” and easy to use, and its primary aim is to handle the transition from driver-controlled operation to autonomous driving.
As a driver reaches a point in the journey where they want the car to take over, steering wheel-mounted paddles allow the driver to switch modes.
The car will also give the driver a message when autonomous operation is available, along with a 60-second countdown at a point where the driver will be required to take control again.
