Toyota Expands HiLux Line-Up

Toyota has announced three new HiLux models that will sit above last year's top-selling SR5 dual-cab ute and provide more rugged and more refined variants to choose from.

The introduction of a luxury-oriented HiLux Rogue offers more cleaner design and interior elements while off-road focused HiLux Rugged and Rugged X are set-up to go further off the beaten track.

The range-topping Rugged X gains a more hard-core look, inspired from Toyota Australia’s local design work on the HiLux Tonka Truck concept, with a large new front bumper that houses a high tensile alloy bash plate and winch-compatible hoopless steel bull bar that’s compatible with the ute’s airbags and other safety systems.

Behind the front bar is a bespoke honeycomb grille and gloss black surround between LED driving lights. Other off-road focused parts include a snorkel, red front and rear recovery hooks, rock rails, load-carrying sports bar and other heavy-duty components.

Unique ‘RuggedX’ badges also adorn the rear and sports bar along with a matt black bonnet sticker with the words ‘Rugged’ underneath.

Lower spec Rugged receives a similar sticker pack outside with a new front-end design and traditional steel bull bar, snorkel and rear sports bar.

The premium-focused Rogue features a new and refined front-end design with hexagonal upper grille and heavily revised fog lamps.

Toyota says that buyers of Australia's top-selling ute are already its customers most likely to add accessories, and the new range offers a blend of what consumers are after.

"HiLux buyers increasingly demand additional features - in fact, they spend more on accessories than any other vehicle in our range," Toyota Australia's vice president sales and marketing Sean Hanley said.

"These new vehicles will enable them to make a statement with advanced toughness, added capability, practical comfort, first-class safety and the in-built strength that makes HiLux the indisputable number one. 

"HiLux Rugged X is a no-compromise vehicle for those seeking adventure with a robust and capable vehicle that makes the ultimate statement: work hard, play harder.

"HiLux Rogue is for people who want refinement and capability, enabling them to go for weekend adventures and do it in style.”

Though pricing and final specification is yet to be confirmed, a Toyota Australia spokesperson confirmed to TMR that the new models would launch in the first half of 2018 and the additional specifications and equipment packaging over the SR5 would likely see the trio priced above the SR5’s starting price of $54,440 plus on-road costs.
