BMW expands baby SUV range
German car maker triples the number of X2 variants.
BMW has bookended its lonely X2.
The German brand initially launched its X2 baby SUV range in Australia with a solo petro-powered front wheel drive variant, but now it has expanded the range in both directions.
First up is the new point of entry into the Audi Q2 rivaling range, the front-wheel X2 18i priced from $49,900 before on-road costs.
The base model comes equipped with 18-inch alloy wheels, adaptive LEd headlights, fog lights, rain sensing wipers, front and rear parking sensors, a reversing camera viewed through a 5.0-inch display, park assist and navigation.
Power for the X2 18i comes from a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbocharged engine - borrowed from sister brand Mini - producing 103kW and 220Nm and is matched to a seven-speed dual clutch automatic.
Leap frogging the existing X2 20i is the range-topping all-wheel drive 20d variant.
Priced from $59,900 - $4000 more than the 20i – the X2 20d is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged diesel unit making 140kW and a sturdy 400Nm. The diesel ditches the dual-clutch auto from the petrol variants and installs a conventional eight-speed torque converter auto.
In addition to the 18i the 20d variant scores 19-inch light alloy wheels, Alcantara upholstery, front sports seats, M leather steering wheel, M sports suspension and an anti-dazzle rear view mirror.
The two new models arrive in local showrooms from June, 2018.
