Toyota marched triumphantly onward during August, with another month of strong sales in Australia’s new car market.
VFACTS revealed sales for the Japanese giant are up 5.1 percent on the same time last year, and the HiLux pickup was again Australia’s best-selling car.
The gap between the HiLux and its nearest rival - Ford’s Ranger - widened last month to 3195 units for the year-to-date, although the Ranger is still ahead when 4WD sales are considered alone.
For Ford fans wishing to stretch the envelope, the Ranger 4WD on its own is actually Australia’s second best-selling car for 2017 so far, behind the Toyota Corolla which finished August in third place behind the two pickups on 2948 sales.
Ranger 4WD models have chalked up 24,257 sales in 2017 to the end of August. For some perspective, Mercedes-Benz has sold 24,878 cars so far this year with every model combined (excluding heavy vehicles), and Kia in the same situation has sold 24,762.
But separating the 2WD HiLux models from the tally sees the 4WD HiLux slip just two places to third for 2017 on 23,132 units, ahead of the Mazda3 on 22,681 sales YTD.
Kia probably won’t be displeased that its tally for the YTD sits slightly above Ford’s Ranger 4WD as a single model, as the Korean carmaker’s sales in Australia are up 31.4 percent.
Another strong month from Kia resulted in 4507 sales and a ninth-placing on the sales ladder, with its Picanto leading the micro car segment for both August and YTD, and the Cerato being the brand’s best-selling model last month on 1425 sales.
Mitsubishi also proved strong in August, finishing fifth on 6649 sales and just four units ahead of Ford in sixth.
Volkswagen continues to regain ground following the dieselgate saga, finishing seventh overall in August with 4730 sales although the brand is down 0.6 percent YTD. Nissan slipped from its usual mid top-ten performance to finish tenth with 4095 sales - down 14.1 percent YTD.
Outside the top-ten, brands performing well in August included Maserati, Renault, Skoda and MINI, which all showed at least reasonable sales growth (up more than 45 percent in the case of Maserati).
A commendable performance as well from Isuzu; which managed more than 2000 sales last month - up 7.8 percent - despite offering just two models in Australia and only a single engine.
Brands on the way up last month included Alfa Romeo (up 33.8 percent), Bentley (30 percent), Aston Martin (20.2 percent), LDV (41.8 percent) and Infiniti (7.9 percent). Brands on the slide included Volvo (down 21.6 percent), Chrysler (45.4 percent), Audi (11.5 percent) and Lexus (2.5 percent).
Battle of the SUVs was won by Hyundai in August with the Tucson midsizer finishing the month fourth overall on 2206 sales.
Toyota’s Rav4 missed the cut for a top-ten finish in August, but the model was still a strong-seller on 1605 units.
Holden’s Commodore finished August in eight on 2071 sales, perhaps because some of its limited edition farewell models have recently been delivered.
The Commodore was missing from the top-ten in July, and the Aussie-built family car in VF guise may have appeared in the top-ten for the last time. We’ll know in the coming months…
