2007 VW Golf R32 review: Quick drive
It's not Japanese, is a hatch and has a V6 engine rather than turbo four, for less than $60,000
It's not Japanese, is a hatch and has a V6 engine rather than turbo four, for less than $60,000. Producing 184 kW and 320 Nm, the ease and strength of the R32's narrow-angle V6 makes it easily exploitable on the road.
The all-wheel-drive system aids the easy delivery of performance, as does the standard six-speed manual. Better still is the $2300 twin-clutch DSG automated manual that anticipates gear changes.
The old R32 was let down by a chassis too stiff for Aussie roads, but this generation is based on the excellent Golf V platform, making it more compliant and a better handler.
Being a VW, the R32 is loaded with gear, including six airbags, ABS with EBD and BAS, stability control, dual climate control, 18-inch alloys, six-CD audio, leather upholstery, heated front seats, bi-xenon headlights and a cool flat-bottomed steering wheel.
