Reviewed: Subaru XV
Off-roaders that aren't, or SUVs - we can't get enough of them. And while the whole idea of an SUV has been to offer more space, height and versatility, the latest trend is for downsizing.
Whether it's from luxury brands or hatchback specialists, the affordable soft-roader is the next must-have showroom darling.
For Subaru, that translates to the XV. Formerly known as the Impreza XV, it's dropped its small-car connection, at least when it comes to the badge. Not that it hides the reality; the XV is to the Impreza what the Outback is to the Liberty.
The two share panels and basic mechanicals but one sits higher and looks more macho thanks to revised bumpers, wheels and other jewellery. While it rides a substantial 75 millimetres higher than the regular Impreza hatch, clever design tricks such as roof rails and the black plastic strips skirting the lower surrounds make it look taller than it is.
