2006 Porsche Cayman S review: Quick drive
Being a hatchback makes the Cayman the most practical Porsche this side of the Cayenne off-roader.
A two-level boot holds a decent amount of lug-gage, and there's more space set aside under the bonnet up-front.
Being based on the Boxster soft-top - albeit with some 911 mixed in - the Cayman S' 3.4-litre, horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine sits behind the two-seat cabin and in front of the rear axle. Producing 217 kW and 340 Nm, it goes from rest to 100 km/h in a claimed 5.4 seconds when mated with the standard six-speed manual. The optional five-speed tiptronic auto knocks that back to 6.1 seconds.
A kerb weight of just 1340 kgs keeps its response athletic. It is a wonderfully precise and flattering car to drive, with huge grip, exact steering and massive braking power. It's easier to drive than big brother 911. The one let-down is that the Cayman S isn't as well equipped in comfort terms as the money may suggest.
