2016 Maserati GranCabrio
Maseratis are a rare breed on our roads but that doesn't bother the Italian supercar maker.
While most brands crave sales growth and ever-expanding model line-ups that fill every nook and cranny in the market, the Modena-based luxury brand trades on exclusivity.
And, in recent years at least, the formula has worked.
Despite the fact only two models - the four-door Quattroporte sedan and the GranTurismo coupe - have worn the famed trident emblem in the past couple of years, the niche maker has turned a tidy profit.
Now there is a third prong in the trident - the GranCabrio, the brand's first four-seat convertible.
The new model competes in rarified air, vying for the affection of the well-heeled against marques such as Ferrari, Lamborghini, Jaguar and Aston Martin.
They are all cars that combine svelte looks with potent engines, cabins swathed in prime-quality cowhide and stratospheric price tags.
Does the Maserati fit the bill? It does on all counts, not the least of which is its $338,000 asking price.
