Watch out, AMG! Hot Genesis models now called Magma, 2024 GV60 electric car expected to be first

Genesis launches its own Magma performance sub-brand with all production models to score go-fast flagship variants.

Genesis has taken to the 2024 New York motor show to launch its new performance sub-brand, dubbed Magma, with the first production model wearing the AMG-rivalling badge likely to be the GV60 electric hot hatch.

The GV60 won’t be the last either, as Genesis “aims to develop a high-performance Magma model for each production vehicle in its existing line-up”, which currently includes the G70 mid-sizer, G80 large sedan, GV70 medium SUV, and GV80 seven-seater.

Overseas markets also have access to the Mercedes-Benz S-Class-rivalling G90 sedan, though the model is not offered in Australian showrooms.

To showcase the brand, the GV60 Magma concept has been shown in New York, sporting a unique exterior colour to reflect its namesake, but the model isn’t just about looking sportier.

Underneath, the GV60 Magma concept boasts improved battery and electric motor technology, while the car is also lower and wider than a standard GV60, promising better grip.

The front bumper has also been tweaked to allow more airflow to cool the batteries, electric motors, and brakes, while the addition of canards helps produce more downforce on the front axle.

Aerodynamically optimised 21-inch wheels and new roof fins also help airflow over the GV60, while the cabin features bucket seats with orange-coloured seatbacks and contrast stitching.

However, Genesis has yet to reveal any details about powertrain or performance.

Instead, Genesis design boss Luc Donckerwolke promises the model “will deliver ample power”.

For reference, the current GV60 line-up tops out with the 360kW/700Nm Performance Lux variant priced at $113,375 before on-road costs.

However, the recently-launched Hyundai Ioniq 5 N punches out 448kW/740Nm and can accelerate from 0-100km/h in as little as 3.4 seconds, potentially foreshadowing the capabilities of a production GV60 Magma as both cars share the same E-GMP underpinnings.

Of note, the GV60 Magma concept is not the first Genesis show car to show off the sportier direction with the GV80 Coupe, X Gran Berlinetta, and G80 sedan also shown off with the eye-catching hue.

The latter model however, will be produced exclusively for the Middle East.
