Video: Police cars damaged in Queensland hooning event, two men charged

The "out-of-control" unauthorised gathering is said to have attracted 350 people, and has been attributed to a visit by a popular YouTube video creator.

Queensland Police has arrested and charged two men in relation to a "large-scale hooning event" in Brisbane's south last week.

Authorities allege approximately 350 people attended the unauthorised gathering in Logan City on 9 March 2024, with some motorists caught on video engaging in hooning activities such as burnouts and street racing.

Police are asking for public assistance in identifying four men who allegedly damaged and vandalised police vehicles while officers attempted to regain control of the event.

Nine News reports the congregation of people has been attributed to a visit by social media and YouTube personality Spanian, with police blocking off the street as a result of the “out-of-control event."

Queensland Police said it has taken a 20-year-old man into custody, where he has allegedly been charged with multiple offences relating to “wilful damage of police property”, committing public nuisance and participating in the hooning event as well as entering an occupied police car.

He is due to appear at a local court on 3 April 2024.

Police said an 18-year-old man has also been arrested and charged with multiple hooning offences such as dangerous operation of a vehicle, engaging in racing and burnouts – with the alleged offender due to appear in a local court on 22 April 2024.

Authorities have said no one injured in the incident.

“Whether you’re a local eshay or YouTube influencer coming from interstate, police will find out about your hooning event and they will interrupt it," Queensland Premier Steven Miles said in a media statement.

Queensland has previously introduced some of Australia's strictest hooning laws – with drivers and spectators of hooning events potentially facing penalties of up to $6000, one-year imprisonment, licence suspension and/or having their car destroyed.
