Revolutionary new way to pay for fuel

In store two-for-one Mother energy drink specials may soon be a thing of the past.

Chevrolet has introduced a new feature in partnership with Shell which allows you to pay for your fuel from the driver's seat, potentially signalling the end of the service station shop.

The new feature is accessed through the car's touchscreen via the Marketplace system which is a e-commerce platform that allows users to make reservations, order food and find parking and hotels nearby.

Users will simply select the Shell icon in Marketplace when visiting a participating retailer which will generate a code to unlock and activate a particular pump and the fuel will be automatically charged to the saved payment method.

“We introduced Marketplace to deliver value, productivity and convenience to our customers,” said Chevrolet's senior manager of online commerce, Rick Ruskin.

“Bringing the Shell Pay & Save functionality right on the touchscreen of our vehicles is the latest advancement of this platform, allowing drivers to simply access Fuel Rewards and pay for gas while inside their car.”

The system could find its way into Holdens in the not too distant future thanks to the Lion brand's increasingly close ties to its American parent company.

A similar app is already fitted to some new Jaguars in the UK. Again in conjunction with Shell, an app is accessed via the vehicle's infotainment system that approves fuel purchases and paid via Apple Pay or PayPal.

In Australia we currently have to settle for the BPme app that allows you to pay for your fuel via you phone not an integrated in-car app.
