Likes
This is the entry-level Megane but it does not feel like a bargain-basement model, particularly under the bonnet.
Renault’s turbocharged 1.2-litre engine pulls well, making a strong 205Nm of torque from just 2000 rpm. Coupled with stop-start fuel-saving technology, the Megane uses just 5.6L/100km of fuel.
The six-speed manual gearbox is a sweet thing with well-spaced ratios that helps keep the motor on the boil.
Precise steering and responsive dynamics combine well with a composed ride.
Driver-focused interior features large tacho, digital speedo and twin readouts for information and entertainment.
Renault backs the Megane with a five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty and roadside assistance package.
Dislikes
While the manual is a good thing, the absence of an automatic option is disappointing.
Renault’s quirky interior has its downsides, ranging from odd-ball cruise control and speed limiter controls to partially hidden buttons for the radio and mp3 system.
Steel wheels with hubcaps are a cheap touch on any new car and the lack of rear parking sensors or reversing camera is disappointing.
Turbo soundtrack may not suit all tastes.
Would you buy one?
I would strongly consider it. Renault’s new engine is a gem, and the car represents excellent value at $19,990 drive-away.
