Proton: New Cars 2012
Proton is set to launch a few updates this year, including a new Persona Elegance and the new Persona later in the year. Proton will also launch the new Exora MPV in Australia, introducing a cheap and cheerful model to the market segment.
PROTON PERSONA ELEGANCE
Vehicle type: Compact sedan. Timing: February
The new Proton Persona Elegance will be a facelift of the current model. It’s set to feature revised styling, with tweaks to the front and rear bumpers, and added features inside such as a new stereo system. Expect driveaway pricing to remain between $15,000 to $20,000 for the Malaysian-sourced light sedan. Look out for more updates upon its launch in the near future.
PROTON S16 SLX
Vehicle type: Compact sedan. Timing: March
The cheapest model in Proton Australia's line-up will get a sporty new look and added safety in 2012, such as ESC, ABS and dual front airbags. It will come with the current 1.3-litre four-cylinder engine, producing 70kW and 120Nm, and the 1.6-litre four-cylinder, producing 82kW and 148Nm. Prices are expected to kick off at around $12,990.
PROTON EXORA
Vehicle type: MPV. Timing: August
Joining the local line-up in the second half of the year is Proton Australia's first MPV, the seven-seat Exora. The compact people mover is expected to be powered by a new 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine producing 103kW and 205Nm, teamed with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Expect Proton's largest car to start below $25,000.
PROTON PERSONA
Vehicle type: Compact sedan. Timing: September
The all-new small sedan will be based on the Proton Tuah concept car (above). It is expected to be available with 1.8- and 2.0-litre engine options. It will also feature modern styling cues as seen on the concept, such as LED taillights and a sleek body design.
