The long-coming next-generation Mercedes-Benz G-Class could be the next big off-roader to benefit from an extensive weight-loss regime.
According to magazine Automobile, the new ‘G Wagen’ will feature a mostly aluminium architecture, helping the big 4WD to shed a whopping 375kg.
That’s significantly more than the roughly 200kg saving reported in the past year, and sharper even than the 300kg saving found in the new Range Rover - thanks again to an aluminium platform.
And with the current G-Class weighing more than 2500kg, a nearly 400kg weight loss would make for significant improvements to fuel consumption and handling alike.
Other changes are expected to include a more modern take on the G-Class 4WD’s legendary design - just as Land Rover will do with its next Defender - marking the model's first styling revolution since 1979.
Reports also suggest we’ll see a 100mm increase in body width, along with a wider track below. Three locking differentials will again star, helping the new G Wagen maintain its off-road ability.
New safety and convenience technologies will also feature, and a selection of petrol and diesel powertrains are expected.
An AMG model will again sit atop the range as a flagship performance.
The new G-Class is expected to debut in 2017.
