Mazda will give a glimpse into the near future with a new hatch concept at the upcoming 2017 Tokyo motor show.
The Japanese brand will premiere the new concept that will preview the next-generation Mazda3 hatch, and will be equipped with the new Skyactiv-X petrol engine that uses a compression ignition instead of conventional sparkplugs.
The Skyactiv-X technology forces the petrol to combust under extremely high compression, a move that will increase fuel efficiency by up to 17 per cent.
However, the technology is slightly confusing in that it will actually still feature a spark plug to use in some circumstances, but the majority of the time it will the compression ignition according to senior Mazda engineer, Kenuchiro Saruwatari, when speaking to Drive in August.
“It is very difficult to use the use the HCCI at all times,” Saruwatari says.
“In certain area it needs to use the combustion area with the sparkplug – it is mixed.
“At high RPM, high load there is no sparkplug.”
The Skyactiv-X technology is part of the company's Zoom-Zoom 2030 vision to help five down global emissions.
Mazda will also show off another concept aimed at previewing the evolution of its Kodo design language. The new four-door coupe concept may also be the brand's annual return of the rotary engine teaser, much like the previous RX-Vision concept.
