Mercedes-Benz trademarks EQG name for electric G-Class
Mercedes-Benz has trademarked a set of names with the European Union Intellectual Property Office for the upcoming all-electric variant of its G-Class four-wheel drive.
The German manufacturer has now officially registered the nameplates ‘EQG 580’ and ‘EQG 560', as discovered by The Drive.
While specific details of each variant won't be confirmed for a number of years, the large numbers in the model designations suggest the electric G-Wagen could pack serious AMG-rivalling power – likely on par with the 385kW/828Nm extracted by the EQS 580 limousine's dual electric motors.
In early 2020, Daimler chairman Ola Källenius confirmed an all-electric G-Class would arrive within "a few years", with work on the vehicle well underway.
"Yes, the G is going to go electric, we have kicked off the concept work for this, so in a few years you’ll be able to go electric with the G as well," said the executive.
It remains to be seen what form the final product will take, and whether it will use the existing model's ladder chassis, or instead opt for an all-new electric-only architecture designed specifically for the EV G-Wagen.
Some online publications speculate the former will come to fruition – deriving power from dual axle-mounted motors and featuring three locking differentials – but these suggestions appear to be based on nothing more than intuition, as no one within the company has commented on design, and no verified plans appear to have leaked.
In 2012 Mercedes-Benz unveiled a hydrogen-powered concept known as the Ener-G-Force (below). The vehicle, revealed at that year's Los Angeles motor show, was designed to show a potential future design direction for the G-Class nameplate.
