Jay Leno hospitalised with serious facial burns from petrol fire – report

One of the world’s most well-known car collectors, comedian Jay Leno, is in hospital after he was burnt in a flash fire.

Comedian and prolific car collector Jay Leno is recovering in hospital after receiving burns to his face from a petrol fire.

His conspicuous absence from an event in Las Vegas due to a “medical emergency” was first reported by People magazine, with Mr Leno later confirming his condition to Hollywood publication Variety.

“I got some serious burns from a gasoline fire. I am okay,” Mr Leno said in a statement.

“Just need a week or two to get back on my feet.”

Celebrity gossip website TMZ reports one of his cars “erupted into flames without warning,” causing injury to the side of his face – but avoiding damage to his eyes or ears.

West Hills Hospital & Burn Centre confirmed to NBC News the 72-year-old had received injuries to his face and hands, but said in a statement Mr Leno was "in good humor and is touched by all the inquiries into his condition and well wishes".

Best known for his 17-year run as host of NBC’s The Tonight Show and his signature double-denim wardrobe, Mr Leno has amassed hundreds of cars over the years – including some of the rarest and most valuable cars in the world.

His collection includes a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing, a 1967 Lamborghini Miura P400, a 1927 Bugatti Type 37A, and a 1994 McLaren F1.

After retiring from The Tonight Show, he started Jay Leno’s Garage in 2015 on US network CNBC, which spans 88 episodes so far across seven seasons.
