Hyundai Veloster Turbo Revealed

Hyundai has shown off its upcoming second-generation Veloster Turbo in disguise this week at Inje Speedway in South Korea, ahead of its full reveal at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit next month.

Details of the new asymmetrical four-door hatch have been partially detailed and, along with a major facelift, it features a revised chassis and engine options as well as new range-topping N model tuned by the brand’s performance arm.

A major overhaul sees Hyundai’s new cascading grille design and thinner LED headlights join a new bumper and bonnet upfront. The A-pillar has been moved rearwards to enhance the asymmetrical four-door hatchback’s coupe-style look and the belt line has been made more prominent over a lower body.

At the rear, the bumper is all-new along with a larger rear-wing design and more aggressive looking diffuser that houses a twin centre-mounted exhaust with a beefier note than before.

Hyundai has confirmed the new second-generation Veloster Turbo will come with the choice of either a 1.4-litre turbo or 1.6-litre turbo with a high-performance Veloster N also coming that is likely to share the same 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo as the i30 N hatch, which produces 202kW of power and 353Nm of torque in the top-spec Performance Package.

The 1.6-litre turbo engine, which is available in the current-generation Veloster here, has been revised to produce maximum torque earlier in the rev range with an overboost function available temporarily between 2000-4000rpm.

A six-speed manual and seven-speed dual-clutch transmission will be available to drive the front wheels.

Underneath is a new ultra-high tensile hot stamped chassis based on the same platform as the i30 and features a new multi-link rear-end, improved steering ratio and suspension tuning. The hot N model is likely to be fitted with adaptive dampers and an electronic differential upfront.

Also carrying over the previous active sound feature that enhances in-cabin engine sound, the feature has been improved and joining the previous sports, normal and eco driving modes is a new smart shift function that learns driver’s habit and customises settings to suit.

Hyundai is also cramming in its latest safety features and has confirmed the new line-up will include autonomous emergency braking, adaptive radar cruise control, lane keeping assist and high beam assist. 

Inside, the interior layout focuses on the driver with a ‘driver-centric’ design that includes a new HUD on separate glass plate with a dedicated sports mode, lower driver’s seat adjustment and raised instrument cluster for a sporty feel.
