Hyundai Kona updated for 2019

New entry-grade model cuts the price for compact SUV

Hyundai has introduced a cheaper entry-grade model to its otherwise more expensive 2019 Kona line-up.

Heading the updated range is the new basic but budget-conscious Go variant while carry-over Active, Elite and Highlander models have been updated with better equipment, including an eight-speaker Krell sound system, USB charging port in the front console and larger 8.0-inch infotainment system with Apple Carplay, Android Auto and sat nav with live traffic.

Starting the range, the Go comes standard with 16-inch steel wheels, black mesh grille, rear spoiler, roof rails, automatic LED headlights, reversing camera, cruise control and a 7.0-inch infotainment display with Apple Carplay/Android Auto.

Priced from $23,500 plus on-road costs, the model is $1000 cheaper than the previous entry-level Active, but, like that model, it doesn’t come with any advanced safety features such as AEB or lane departure warning. Both features are, however, included in the optional $1500 Smart Sense pack that also brings blind-spot monitoring and rear-cross traffic alert - adaptive cruise control remains unavailable across the range.

The Active still gets 16-inch alloys, rear parking sensors and a leather steering wheel while the Elite continues to add 17-inch alloys, leather seats, keyless entry and push start ignition, climate control, rain sensing wipers, fog lights, and grey exterior garnishes.

But the upgraded equipment for 2019 comes at a price, and both models are $1000 more expensive than before.

At the top of the range, the Highlander sees a further price hike of up to $3000, now coming standard with an electric sunroof that can be no-cost optioned to a contrasting two-tone black roof. It also comes with Hyundai Auto Link Premium that enables car monitoring and connectivity features via a mobile phone app, such as current and past driving information (distance, fuel use and average speed), comparison to other drivers, vehicle health check and roadside assistance with automatic emergency alert.

Auto Link can also be optioned to Go, Active and Elite models.

The entire Kona range continues to be offered in two driveline configurations: a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol producing 110kW/180Nm through a six-speed automatic transmission to the front wheels and a 1.6-litre petrol turbo producing 130kW/265Nm via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic to all-four.
