The battle for front-wheel-drive supremacy at Germany’s famous Nurburgring circuit continues, with Honda the latest to claim it now has the fastest FWD machine.
Fans won’t be surprised to learn that the recently-unveiled Civic Type R is the new champion, having lapped the 20.83km Nordschleife section in a time of 7m50.63s.
That puts the Type R almost four seconds ahead of the outgoing champion - Renault’s stripped-out track-day special Megane RS 275 Trophy-R, which lapped the circuit in 7m54.36s midway through last year.
The Megane had also improved on its predecessor’s time by around four seconds, taking the crown from Seat’s Leon Cupra which managed 7m58s.
The timing of Honda’s announcement might not sit well with Renault, which today announced its RS 275 Trophy-R will set the first-ever lap record at Melbourne's Albert Park circuit for FWD cars.
