Ford trademarks Skyline name in the United States

Ford swoops in and trademarks the Skyline name in the US, but what does the manufacturer want with it?

Ford has sneakily submitted a trademark application for the name Skyline in the United States.

The Ford Motor Company applied for the trademark on July 12, 2021 to the US Patent and Trademark Office, which was discovered by industry site Ford Authority.

It inadvertently steals the name that is more traditionally associated with Nissan, which brought us the likes of the Skyline GT-R and dates back to the late 1950s.

According to the application, the name was filed under Goods and Services, specifically for “Motor land vehicles, namely, SUVs, trucks and automobiles.” That would point towards Ford using the name in relation to a new vehicle, but nothing of the sort is known to be in the pipeline currently.

Ford has never used the name Skyline before, though it has used Skyliner previously. Most recently, the manufacturer unveiled a business jet-like concept van named the Ford Transit Skyliner.

Nissan currently uses the Skyline name in Japan for a domestic market four-door sedan.

Ultimately, what Ford plans to do with its new trademarked name is anybody’s guess.
