Ford Performance teases upcoming electric crate motor for “restomods and projects”

Ford Performance has shown off new blueprints for an upcoming electric 'crate' motor, slated for launch in November this year, aimed at owners and modification outfits looking to convert classic Fords to electric power.

The zero-emission powertrain will be named the Eluminator – presumably a reference to the brand’s 'Aluminator' V8 engine – and is designed for Ford-based “restomods and projects,” according to a recent tweet.

Diagrams released alongside the announcement suggest the unit will be 570mm long, and approximately 390mm tall – significantly smaller than the 5.0-litre V8 petrol engine fitted to the current-generation Ford Mustang.

Performance specifications are yet to be announced, however it’s likely Ford is looking to at least match the 150kW Chevrolet ‘Connect and Cruise’ electric 'crate' motor system launched last year.

Multiple third parties have launched similar products in recent years, including the Tesla-derived EV West motor which bolts directly into the engine bay of a 'small block' V8-powered American car. The same company also offers conversion kits for classic rear-engined vehicles, including the Porsche 911 and 914, Volkswagen Beetle, and Toyota MR2.

The Ford Performance Eluminator is slated to launch at this year’s Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show – a large annual event held by the automotive aftermarket industry – on November 2 in Las Vegas.
