Fiat has confirmed that its MX-5 based 124 Spider convertible sports car will get a high-performance Abarth variant.
“You like performance? There will be an Abarth version,” said Fiat Chrysler COO Alfredo Altavilla to UK mag Auto Express.
And Altavilla says it won’t just be a sticker-tuned “sporty” derivative - it will turn up the wick in the same manner as the razor-sharp Abarth 695 Biposto did.
“Abarth is all about performance and so I’ve told my team to stop working on colours and trims,” Altavilla said.
“Any new version of an Abarth car should deliver some sort of a performance enhancement, otherwise it is useless.”
Exactly what enhancements will be applied to the Abarth 124 Spider remains a secret for now, but it’s rumoured that a 150kW version of the Alfa Romeo 4C’s 1.7 litre turbo inline four could see service under the 124’s bonnet.
