Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s live flight data now on Facebook-owned Twitter rival
Real-time flight data from Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s private jet is now available on Threads – a rival to the Musk-owned Twitter, created by Facebook’s parent company – after it was removed from Twitter last year.
An online account which was suspended from Twitter after legally sharing real-time flight data from the private jet of Tesla CEO Elon Musk – who also owns the social media platform – has resurfaced on a new rival online network formed by the company behind Facebook.
In December 2022, Twitter account ‘@ElonJet’ – run by 21-year-old US programmer Jack Sweeney – was suspended from the service after posting real-time flight data from Mr Musk’s private jet using publicly-available information for almost two years.
The account’s suspension came weeks after Mr Musk purchased the social media platform for $US44 billion ($AU64.35 billion), and just a month after the Tesla CEO declared he would not silence the user, “even though that is a direct personal safety risk".
However, as first reported by news agency Reuters, the ‘ElonJet’ account is active online once more, appearing on new social media platform Threads as @elonmusksjet.
Launched earlier this month, Threads is owned and created by Facebook’s parent company – Meta – as a rival to Twitter.
Since Mr Musk took ownership of Twitter in October 2022, the social media platform has allegedly experienced a drop in web traffic, according to Matthew Prince – CEO of tech analytics CloudFlare.
Mr Musk’s purchase of Twitter led to an almost-immediate drop in Tesla’s share prices, fell from $US228.52 on 28 October 2022 to $US108.10 on 3 January 2023 – its lowest value in 30 months – as Mr Musk split his time between the companies.
Tesla’s share prices have since recovered to $US269.79 as of writing though this has also been attributed to an increase in sales, buoyed by the electric-car specialist cutting prices across the globe in an attempt to boost deliveries.
While 'ElonMusksJet’ has so far amassed more than 115,000 followers on Threads, it is still approximately 410,000 users shy of the 525,000 who followed the account at the time it was suspended from Twitter.
Mr Sweeney has also started a Threads account which tracks Meta and Facebook owner Mark Zuckerberg’s private jet, though less than 6000 users have followed the account in the week it has been active.
