Once-in-a-lifetime chance to drive around Bathurst without a speed limit

The hallowed tarmac of Mount Panorama, Bathurst will be without its 60km/h speed limit for a select few members of the public later this month, with a once-in-a-lifetime track day at the famous circuit allowing drivers to take on the tourist drive at any speed.

While the 6.213-kilometre race track is open almost every day throughout the year as a public road, its 60km/h speed limit is heavily enforced by patrolling police and video cameras around the facility.

However, on Wednesday November 29, Sydney-based driver training company Driving Solutions is running its Bathurst Track Day, allowing motorists to drive around the Mount Panorama race track without the risk of being fined – at any speed limit.

There are a handful of requirements for drivers participating in the day, such as needing an entry-level Motorsport Australia ‘Speed’ licence – priced from $165 – an approved helmet (though hire helmets are available on the day) and enclosed shoes.

Driving Solutions also requires participants to have prior track day experience at a range of circuits across Australia, but it does not limit the event to those who only have dedicated vehicles for the circuit.

Instead, unlike the Challenge Bathurst time trial event the weekend prior, Driving Solutions’ track day is only open to road-registered cars which are in roadworthy condition – meaning there’s no chance of sharing the circuit with bespoke racers.

James Stewart, the boss of Driving Solutions, told Drive high-performance cars ranging from the Toyota GR Yaris hot hatch to the Porsche 911 GT3 sports car make up those on its entry list.

As Mount Panorama is usually only closed off for professional racing drivers, a handful of experienced racers will be available as passengers to give expert tuition – including Supercars race winner Andre Heimgartner, Bathurst Six Hour winner Jayden Ojeda and V8 Touring Cars champion Justin Ruggier.

Driving Solutions also runs a free driver-training program for 16 to 24-year-olds, which is funded by Ford Australia and takes place across the east coast.
