Don’t panic: Which new diesel cars require AdBlue in Australia?

While the AdBlue shortage might have some motorists worried, experts say there's no reason to panic as it primarily impacts trucks and there's a solution on the way. For peace of mind, here's a list of the diesel cars on sale in Australia that require the emissions-reducing additive.

Owners of diesel-powered cars, SUVs, four-wheel-drives, utes, and vans in Australia need not panic about a potential AdBlue shortage.

The emissions-reducing additive will primarily impact the trucking industry – which uses AdBlue in huge volumes – but there are already plans underway to make sure trucks delivering goods and services across Australia do not suddenly come to a stop.

In the meantime, the selection of modern diesel cars, SUVs, 4WDs, utes and vans that do need AdBlue are unlikely at this stage to be impacted, as they do not use as much as heavy vehicles.

Depending on use, passenger vehicles requiring AdBlue typically only need a top-up of 10 litres every 10,000km or so – which can be done at the bowser, or during a routine service.

However, industry experts believe diesel passenger vehicles are unlikely to be impacted because once the heavy trucking industry has sufficient supplies, there will be ample left over for passenger cars, SUVs and light commercial vehicles (utes and vans).

However, to add further peace of mind, Drive has compiled a list of passenger vehicles that we know require AdBlue.

While we have endeavoured to capture every model, this is by no means a definitive list – so if there's a vehicle we may have missed, either in showrooms or recently discontinued, let us know in the comments below.

Alpina Australia have been contacted for further details regarding the use of AdBlue in its vehicles. This story will be updated with its response.

Footnotes

  • Despite complying with Euro 6 regulations, the SsangYong Musso and Rexton don't require AdBlue.
  • While the MY21 (Model Year 2021) Jeep Grand Cherokee diesel doesn't need AdBlue, versions stamped MY19 or MY20 do.
  • The Genesis G80 2.2D was introduced in Australia in July, with a requirement for AdBlue – however, it was discontinued in November.
  • The Land Rover Discovery Sport D165 and Range Rover D300 also require AdBlue, however these variants have been discontinued / are soon to be superseded.
  • The Audi SQ7 and SQ8 are also believed to have required AdBlue, however these models were recently discontinued in favour of petrol-powered versions due next year.
  • The BMW 520d Touring also requires AdBlue – though this model was discontinued in 2020.
