Do you save time in the new Rozelle Tunnel? We find out

The tunnel or Iron Cove Link which is part of Sydney's $16.8 billion WestConnex system bypasses seven traffic lights on Victoria Road, starting at the Iron Cove Bridge and emerging onto the Anzac Bridge. It also gives motorists a faster journey to the airport via the M8 tunnel. 

In peak times it is set to improve the run for city-bound commuters, however signage for the bypass has caused confusion since its opening on November 26. The tunnel signs give the impression that it is a toll road, but while the tunnel does connect through to the tolled M8, the city-bound lanes are free to use. 

In our test at 11:00am on a weekday, the tunnel only saved us six seconds compared to Victoria Road. In fairness to the tunnel, it was a good run above ground, with only one red light and very light traffic. 

Driving the Iron Cove Link is straightforward and accidentally ending up on the M8 toll road isn't a big issue, as you would need to take the well-marked exit off the city-bound lanes.

If you were to end up on the M8 by accident, the first exit is some six minutes and $5.65 in tolls away in St Peters. 

Around 100,000 vehicles are expected to use the Rozelle interchange each day, and during peak times it will hopefully save you more than a few seconds in the process.
