DeLorean goes back to the future with new electric car
The DeLorean time machine has been reborn for the electric era – but don't expect the ruler-drawn lines of the original to live on.
The infamous DMC DeLorean is set to be revived as an all-electric sports car – and the first teaser images have been released.
Best known for its appearance as a time machine in the 1980s Back to the Future film franchise, the original DeLorean (shown below) was built between 1981 and 1983 before its maker went spectacularly bankrupt.
The branding was acquired in 1995 by a Texas-based company, which recently confirmed plans to apply the stainless steel-bodied two-seater's iconic name to a new car for the electric era.
Last night the image at the top of this page was posted to Twitter, indicating the new DeLorean will be loosely inspired by the original and far from an exact replica.
Set for a full unveiling on 18 April 2022, the makers promise the new model will be a “driver’s car and not a time capsule.”
When asked about the potential for an Australian launch, a spokesperson for the marque told Drive: “At the moment, we are not releasing any details.”
