Aston Martin Valkyrie power leaks

British supercar claims record 842kW from V12.

The Aston Martin Valkyrie hypercar will boast the most powerful naturally-aspirated engine in the history of production cars.

Or at least that’s what engine supplier Cosworth claimed via Twitter before hurriedly deleting the tweet and issuing a statement saying it was a mistake.

However, before it was deleted it was captured and appears to confirm the 6.5-litre V12 in the back of the Valkyrie will boast a whopping 842kW of power - or 1130hp in the old money. To put that in context the Ferrari La Ferrari produced 590kW from its 6.2-litre V12 when it launched in 2014 with a total output of 708kW when its electric motor assisted, showing just how far Aston Martin is raising the stakes when it comes to road car power.

However, the Cosworth tweet didn’t clarify if that figure includes the Valkyrie’s own hybrid system, a Formula One-inspired energy recovery system (ERS) built by Croatian electric supercar specialists Rimac.

The Valkyrie has been developed by Aston Martin in partnership with Red Bull Advanced Technologies, the company behind the energy drink’s F1 cars, and headed by famed designer Adrian Newey. The car uses a number of suppliers more typically associated with racing, including Cosworth for the engine and Ricardo for the transmission.

Aston Martin has confirmed it will build only 150 road-going examples of the Valkyrie which it claims will be able to lap a racetrack as fast as an F1 car. It will also build 25 track-only specials called the Valkyrie AMR Pro (pictured, above).

The British brand is using the Valkyrie project as a showcase for its new range of mid-engine supercars that are set to launch in 2020 carrying the Vanquish name.

"If I'd had gone directly into that market you guys would have said 'I get Aston as a GT car, what level of credibility does it have as a GT car. Why is it chasing that ultimate performance,'" Aston Martin CEO Andy Palmer told Drive in 2017. "By doing the Valkyrie what we're doing is setting that halo, setting that second strand of DNA."
