Amarok V6 will be priced under $50k

Volkswagen has confirmed its new entry-level Amarok V6 model, the V6 Core 4x4, will be priced at under $50,000.

It will be the first time VW has offered its V6 ute under the price barrier, though buyers not willing to spend a little extra will have to wait to get one.

Ready to for delivery late-October, the German brand has not announced pricing yet but told Drive at the launch of its top-dog Amarok 580 Ultimate that the Core will break the $50k mark when the manual is available, with the automatic transmission demanding a premium over that on launch.

“We will price the Core as close as possible to $50,000 but it will be the manual which really disrupts pricing,” VW commercial vehicles director Carlos Santos told Drive.

“The manual will come well under fifty grand,” he said. “With a V6 motor it has huge appeal at that point.”

Given the price gap between auto and stick shift Amarok models in the range, it will likely put the price of the eight-speed auto-equipped at around $50,990 when it goes on sale this month.

Santos said the manual version wouldn't be available this year and likely won’t go on sale until Q1 2019.

The V6 Core will come equipped with a 165kW/550Nm tune of the 3.0-litre V6 turbo diesel that powers the range, rising temporarily to 180kW on overboost to all-four-wheels via its permanent all-wheel-drive system.

As the most basic model in the V6 range, the Core comes equipped with a cloth interior and hose down rubber floors ‘equipped with the off-roader in mind.’

“In many ways, the V6 Amarok is the new muscle car, and what we’re currently seeing is that many of our customers are buying the Amarok for its on-road abilities and refinement," said marketing manager for Volkswagen commercial vehicles Nicholas Reid.

"While the Core V6 will do that too and more, the Core’s specification is targeted to our heartland off-road driver."

Elsewhere are 17-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, black rear bumper, door handles and mirrors, climate control and App Connect infotainment system with Apple Carplay and Android Auto.

The sharp price comes as the current-generation Amarok nears its end and extra value can be further squeezed out of the segment's most powerful workhorse.

But you’ll have to wait for the manual…
