2024 Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series price and specs: Big price rises coming, due from next month

The facelifted Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series – now with the option of four-cylinder turbo-diesel power and automatic transmission – is due in Australia next month with big price rises. But order books for the V8 are still closed.

  • 2024 Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series pricing and specifications
  • New four-cylinder turbo-diesel and six-speed automatic added to the range alongside V8 manual
  • The 2.8-litre four-cylinder automatic is dearer than the previous V8 manual
  • Interior and exterior equipment upgraded, extra safety technology
  • Priced from $75,600 plus on-road costs

The automatic, turbo-diesel four-cylinder version of the updated, 2024 Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series is due in Australian showrooms from next month (November 2023) with updated equipment, a fresh look, and price rises of $4600 to $8400.

Pricing for the 2024 Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series released today shows the new 2.8-litre turbo diesel four-cylinder automatic will be $4600 more expensive than the starting price of the V8 manual from earlier this year.

But the new four-cylinder option will be cheaper than the updated V8 manual – when it eventually becomes available again – because the prices of V8 variants have risen by up to $8400.

Meanwhile, order books for the Toyota's long-standing 4.5-litre turbo-diesel V8 remain closed – possibly until early next year – while the company continues to work through the backlog of customer orders.

That means, for now, the turbo-diesel four-cylinder (the same 2.8-litre and six-speed auto as the HiLux, Fortuner and Prado) is set to be the only LandCruiser 70 Series on sale in Australia for the foreseeable future.

Revealed in August 2023, the 2024 Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series represents the first facelift to the workhorse model in 15 years.

Prices across the LandCruiser 70 Series range have risen along with the option of a new 2.8-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine, which now opens the range from $75,600 plus on-road costs in LandCruiser 76 Series Workmate wagon guise – $4600 more than the now-discontinued turbo-diesel V8 equivalent.

Excluding the WorkMate wagon, all LandCruiser 70 Series body styles (wagon/76 Series, Troop Carrier/78 Series, and cab-chassis/79 Series) and variants (WorkMate, GX and GXL) will offer both the four-cylinder and V8 turbo-diesel engines.

Compared to the pre-facelifted V8, prices are up from $4250 to $4700 for the four-cylinder turbo-diesel, while the refreshed turbo V8s incur price rises between $8350 and $8800.

Headlining the new 70 Series is a 2.8-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine (the first non-six or eight-cylinder engine in the model’s line-up since 1991) which is mated exclusively with a six-speed automatic transmission (the first two-pedal offering since 1990).

Although LandCruiser fans may question the wisdom of a four-cylinder option, the 2.8-litre turbo-diesel produces 150kW and 500Nm – 1kW less but 70Nm more than the V8. And the four-cylinder matches the V8's 3500kg braked towing capacity.

As previously reported, the updated LandCruiser 70 Series is equipped with a new bonnet, front wheel arches, grille (now with ‘TOYOTA’ script) and bumper – and adopts circular LED headlights with automatic high-beam.

All grades of the new 70 Series are also equipped with autonomous emergency braking (with pedestrian and cyclist detection), lane departure alert and speed sign recognition.

Inside, all examples are equipped with a new 6.7-inch infotainment screen – including for the first time wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto – and a 4.2-inch digital instrument display (with a 70 Series-first digital speedometer), which is housed in a new instrument cluster.

While WorkMate and all Troop Carrier variants appear to retain the current LandCruiser 70 Series’ silver 16-inch alloy wheels, wagon and cab-chassis GX and GXL grades now score dark grey alloys and wheel arch flares.

LandCruiser 70 Series GXL variants across the board are now equipped with two USB-C ports (replacing the older 12-volt socket), while the wagon body style gains a reversing camera.

The 2024 Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series four-cylinder automatic is due in Australian showrooms from November 2023.

Drive will report further updates on the reopening of V8 manual orders as soon as that information becomes available.
