Orders for the top-selling version of the 2023 Suzuki Jimny four-wheel-drive have been paused due to unprecedented demand – and prices up to $7000 higher than they were four years ago.

As reported first by Drive, Suzuki Australia stopped taking new orders for the top-selling three-door automatic 'GLX' version of the Jimny on 19 January 2023, until production can catch up with record demand.

Drive understands Suzuki Australia is currently holding 3500 orders for the Jimny three-door automatic – which, at current production forecasts, could equate to a wait time of 18 months.

Three-door manual Suzuki Jimny models remain on sale, as demand for these models – the standard 'GLX' model and basic Lite – is not as high.

Two-tone paint schemes – with black contrast roof panels – face longer wait times than single-tone colours.

Customers waiting for a new Suzuki Jimny three-door auto will have the choice of retaining their spot on the queue, or opting to move near the top of the wait list for a five-door automatic Jimny, which is due in Australian showrooms in late 2023.

Revealed in January, the five-door Suzuki Jimny adds 340mm to the length and wheelbase of the three-door – and will be built in India, rather than the Japanese factory that produces Australia's three-door Jimny 4WDs.

The unprecedented demand is despite multiple price rises for the Suzuki Jimny since it arrived in Australian showrooms in January 2019, which have pushed the standard automatic model up $8000 – or 33 per cent – from $23,990 to $31,990 plus on-road costs.

The price of the three-door automatic Jimny has risen from $25,990 to $33,490 plus on-road costs – and the base-model Jimny Lite has risen in price by $3500, from $26,990 to $30,490 plus on-road costs.

Standard features have remained largely unchanged since launch. The standard Jimny model has returned to a 7.0-inch touchscreen fitted at the factory in Japan, rather than a 9.0-inch unit offered for 12 months from late 2021, which was designed and fitted in Australia to side-step semiconductor shortages.

Power-folding mirrors have also been added over the standard model's life – as well as a five-year warranty across the Suzuki range, introduced in 2019.

All models continue to be powered by a 1.5-litre non-turbo four-cylinder petrol engine, developing 75kW (at 6000rpm) and 130Nm (at 4000rpm) – sent to a part-time four-wheel-drive system with low-range.

A five-speed manual transmission is standard across the range, with a four-speed automatic available as a $2000 option on the better-equipped standard (or 'GLX') version.

Suzuki Australia claims fuel consumption in mixed driving of 6.4 litres per 100km for the manual, or 6.9L/100km for the automatic. The fuel tank can hold 40 litres. More specifications are at the bottom of this story.
