2023 GWM Tank 300 petrol to join hybrid within months
The Tank 300 Hybrid from Chinese auto giant Great Wall Motors has just gone on sale in Australia. Now a cheaper, turbo petrol version is around the corner.
The Tank 300 Hybrid off-roader from China’s Great Wall Motors is about to be joined by a more affordable turbo-petrol variant.
As previously reported, the 2023 GWM Tank 300 Hybrid is available in two model grades – from $55,990 drive-away or $60,990 drive-away – and has been available to order since December 2022. The first deliveries are expected within weeks.
Now the distributor for GWM in Australia has confirmed the hybrid versions will soon be joined by turbo-petrol models.
Prices and specifications for the turbo-petrol GWM Tank 300 are due to be announced closer to Australian showroom arrivals in the coming months.
Based on industry estimates, the prices for the non-hybrid versions of the GWM Tank 300 are expected to be close to $44,990 drive-away and $49,990 drive-away.
“Pricing is not signed off yet,” a GWM Haval spokesperson told Drive in a recent media briefing. “But we will bring the petrol to market most likely before the middle of this year.”
The Tank 300 has “the potential to deliver more volume” for Great Wall Motors in Australia, given our love affair with off-road vehicles.
“We certainly think Tank has got a big opportunity to deliver more (sales) volume more quickly,” the spokesperson said.
The Tank 300 is based on the same heavy-duty frame as the GWM Cannon Ute, but has a five-seat wagon body.
Although the Tank 300 appears large in these photos, in fact it is smaller than a Ford Everest but bigger than a Toyota RAV4 Hybrid.
The GMW Tank 300 Hybrid is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine paired to a nine-speed automatic transmission and a hybrid system.
Power outputs for the turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine for the non-hybrid model are yet to be confirmed.
