- 2021 BMW 4 Series price and specs announced
- Local examples to arrive in first quarter of 2021
- Three engines offered locally, with range-topping M440i xDrive producing 285kW/500Nm
- All Australian models to feature the M Sport package as standard
Alongside the 420i, Australian buyers will also have the choice of the $107,900 plus on-road costs 430i, and the range-topping M440i xDrive priced from $135,900 plus on-road costs.
The new models arrive approximately four months after the 4 Series Coupe touched down in local BMW showrooms.
At 4768mm, the all-new model is 128mm longer than the outgoing 4 Series, and the wheelbase has been stretched by 41mm.
It is also 27mm wider than its predecessor, at 1852mm.
At the front, the convertible shares its controversial, tall kidney grilles with the coupe, however BMW's Head of Design, Domagoj Dukec, revealed earlier this year the polarising design won't be adopted by other models.
A new panel-bow soft-top roof – which is approximately 40 per cent lighter than the existing retractable hardtop – can be opened and closed at speeds of up to 50km/h in just 18 seconds.
The new roof also takes up less physical space than the hardtop variant, with the new car gaining 85 litres of boot space, for a total of 385 litres.
A removable wind deflector is fitted as standard.
The 420i and 430i models both feature 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engines, delivering 135kW/300Nm and 190kW/400Nm respectively.
Meanwhile, the M440i xDrive picks up a 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder unit producing an impressive 285kW/500Nm.
All three powertrains are paired with an eight-speed torque-converter automatic transmission, paired with wheel-mounted paddle shifters. The 420i and 430i are rear-wheel-drive, while the flagship M440i xDrive sends drive to all four wheels.
The M Sport package, sports seats, automatic seat belt feeders, Vernasca leather trim, centre console knee pads, front seat heating, 19-inch alloys and a sports steering wheel are all standard on Australian models.
Other standard features include 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a large head-up display, wireless phone charging, DAB+ digital radio, LED headlights and tri-zone climate control.
A spate of driver assistance tech – including autonomous emergency braking, lane change warning, lane departure warning, traffic-sign recognition and Reversing Assistant – are also standard-fit.
The 430i adds adaptive suspension, keyless entry, M Sport brakes, a 360-degree camera and the Driving Assistant Professional safety system, which adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go and lane-keep assist.
M440i xDrive models add unique 19-inch alloy wheels, Cerium Grey mirror caps, kidney grilles and exhaust outlets, laser headlights, an M Sport rear differential, ambient LED cabin lighting, steering wheel heating, integrated neck warmers, and a Harman/Kardon surround sound system.
Extended BMW Individual Merino leather trim and BMW Individual full leather trim will be made available at a later date, as an alternative to the standard ‘Vernasca’ leather trim.
Three option packages are on offer.
The $4300 Visibility Package adds ambient lighting and laser headlights, the Comfort Package ($2600 for 420i, $1700 for 430i, as some included features are already standard on the latter) adds a heated steering wheel, adjustable lumbar support and Comfort Access, while the Driver's Assistant Package ($3770, only for 420i) adds tyre pressure monitoring, Driving Assistant Professional safety features, and automatic parking.
Eight paint finishes are available, with Alpine White representing the only no-cost option.
The metallic line-up – comprising Black Sapphire, Mineral White, Portimao Blue, San Remo Green and Arctic Race Blue – is priced at $2000.
Meanwhile, the premium Dravit Grey metallic and Tanzanite Blue metallic options are priced at $3850 each.
