2018 Toyota Camry To Launch With Five-Star Safety

Maximum ANCAP rating awarded to Toyota’s new mid-sizer

Toyota will launch its all-new Camry with five-star safety, with safety authority the Australian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) having crash tested the new model before it goes on sale.

The new generation car scored a total of 36.16 out of a possible 37 points under the ANCAP test program, resulting in the maximum possible five-star rating.

The 2018 Camry also scored a maximum 16 out of 16 points in the side impact a pole tests and an impressive 15.16 out of 16 in the frontal offset crash test (below).

Amongst active safety systems for the new Camry autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning and lane keeping assist are fitted as standard across all variants, which also drew praise from ANCAP.

Crash testing was conducted by ANCAP within Australia, meaning that the usual rating for adult and child occupant protection aren’t published as they would be for crash data supplied by Euro ANCAP - conversely an overall score is supplied unlike European tests.

The Camry remains a popular choice for families and fleet buyers so it is important high levels of safety are offered,” ANCAP CEO James Goodwin said.

“We’re pleased to see Toyota maintain its high level of safety with manufacturing of the Camry having now switched from local production to a Japanese-built model.”

Amongst the list of standard safety features the new Camry includes dual front, front seat side, full-length curtain, and driver’s knee airbags, electronic traction and stability control, ABS brakes with emergency brake assist, seatbelt pretensioners for outboard occupants, driver fatigue detection, and distance-keeping cruise control.

The 2018 model year Camry goes on sale in November 2017 and comes from Toyota Japan following the October closure of the company’s Australian manufacturing operations.
