2017 BMW 5 Series Touring spied with lightweight camouflage
The next-generation 2017 BMW 5 Series Touring has been spotted again, this time with even less camouflage.
Following the recently-revealed 'G30' 5 Series sedan, the new wagon wears the same face, though its more practical rump is still concealed under large amounts of swirly disguise.
Despite its load-lugging intentions, the 5 Series Touring will maintain an athletic profile, thanks to its sloping roofline and fastback tailgate.
Like its sedan sibling, the 5 Series wagon will be broader and flatter than the model it replaces, giving it a wider stance and sportier look.
It will be underpinned by BMW's 'Cluster Architecture' modular architecture, which utilises high-strength lightweight materials such as carbon-fibre and aluminium.
With its lighter platform, the 5 Series sedan is up to 100kg lighter than the outgoing 'F10', so expect the wagon to see similar weight losses.
Under the bonnet will be the same range of engines that power the sedan, including a selection of turbocharged four-, six- and eight-cylinder petrol and diesel engines.
These include the 185kW/350Nm 530i, 250kW/450Nm 540i, 140kW/400Nm 520d along with the 195kW/620Nm 530d.
Also on the cards are the 530e iPerformance plug-in hybrid (PHEV) along with the high-po M550i xDrive that produces 340kW of power and 650Nm of torque from its turbocharged 4.4-litre V8.
It's unknown whether BMW will offer an M5 version of the new Touring wagon, though recent spy images of the upcoming Alpina B5 Touring suggest the company has prepared the more practical 5 Series for go-fast applications.
Other features to expect are a suite of new technologies offered in the sedan, like wireless Apple CarPlay functionality along with Remote 3D View - which allows owners to check the surroundings of their vehicle via the BMW Connected smartphone app.
The new 5 Series sedan was revealed last month and is expected to land in Australia before mid-2017, so it's likely the wagon will be revealed either December this year or early next year before launching in the second half of 2017.
