Holden has announced a number of updates to its Commodore line-up for the 2012 model year, including flex-fuel capability across the range and improved fuel consumption.
A number of "subtle design and feature enhancements" are also promised for the Commodore family - although details of these tweaks are on the top-secret list until production begins next month.
We can also expect a range of dedicated LPG models to do battle with Ford's Falcon EcoLPi from early 2012.
For the 2012 model year, Holden has added flex-fuel capability to its larger 3.6 litre SIDI V6 engine, joining the 3.0 litre SIDI V6 and Gen IV 6.0 litre V8 engines that featured the technology at launch of the updated VE II range in August last year.
With the update to the 3.6 litre V6, the entire Commodore line-up is able to run on bio-ethanol/E85 fuel - a blend of up to 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent petrol.
Bio-ethanol is made from the waste by-product of wheat, sugar and sorghum. Advances are also being made in converting household garbage into bio-ethanol.
“Caltex and other fuel retailers are making high ethanol-blend fuels available and we are working with our consortium partners to build Australia’s first second-generation ethanol plant to turn rubbish into fuel," Holden Chairman and MD Mike Devereux said.
“Alternative fuels like bio-ethanol and LPG offer great potential for Australia through reduced CO2 emissions, regional development and energy independence."
According to Holden, carbon emissions for Commodore cars running on bio-ethanol/E85 can be reduced by up to 40 percent.
Fuel consumption for the 3.0 litre SIDI V6-powered Commodore Omega has also improved, dropping from 9.1 l/100km to 8.9 l/100km.
The savings come thanks to an improved automatic transmission, featuring a revised torque converter and tweaks to reduce mechanical losses.
The air-conditioning system has also been re-engineered to improve efficiency and draw less operating power.
The updated-for-2012 Commodore range goes on sale in mid-September, with pricing and technical details to be revealed closer to launch.
