Judges for the 2013 World Car of the Year and World Performance Car of the Year awards have whittled potential candidates to a new shortlist, announced today.

Still in the running for World Car of the Year is the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, Porsche's Boxster and Cayman twins, the Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ duo, and the new Volkswagen Golf.

With the Golf already announced as this year's European Car of the Year, Volkswagen could soon add a second major award to its cabinet in the space of just one month.

If the Volkswagen marque takes the award again this year, it will follow a big win in 2012 with its tiny Up! hatch.

And, while the 2011 award went to the Nissan Leaf, Volkswagen was also victorious in 2010 with the Polo light hatch and in 2009 with the Golf Mk6.

As a group, Volkswagen's WCotY and WPCotY wins have also included the Audi R8 and R8 V10, the Audi RS 4, and, in 2012, the new Porsche 911.

Surviving the culling of the World Performance Car of the Year category is Ferrari's F12 Berlinetta, while the fan-favourite Boxster/Cayman and 86/BRZ models make a second appearance.

As an affordable sports car produced by a pair of Japanese marques with strong reputations, we could see the Toyota and Subaru coupes take wins in both categories - a feat that no car has accomplished since the award's 2005 inauguration.

World Green Car of the Year finalists have also been announced, including the Renault Zoe, the Tesla Model S, and the Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid.

Finally, the World Car Design of the Year finalists are the Aston Martin Vanquish, the Jaguar F-Type and the new Mazda6.

Note: TMR's earlier European Car of the Yeart article described the new Golf as the World Car of the Year. This error has been corrected and we apologise for any confusion.
