As our roads get colder, darker, and wetter, Victoria's Transport Accident Commission (TAC) has issued a winter safety warning.

Aimed at Victorian motorists - particularly those in regional areas - the message highlights simple steps we can all take to keep safer on the roads.

Ensuring our tyres are up to scratch and slowing down in wet or foggy conditions are key points raised.

New statistics show that road deaths in regional Victoria have fallen to 55 - down from 60 for the same period in 2011, and even further below the five year average of 62.

TAC's message urges motorists not to be complacent despite this marginal drop in fatalities.

"Every death and serious injury on our roads is preventable and by taking a few simple precautions you could potentially save your life”, said acting TAC CEO Tracey Slatter.

TAC figures show that almost 48 percent of 2012 fatalities on Victorian roads have occurred in regional areas; concerning numbers, given the lower traffic density compared with urban areas.

The warning also highlights a misconception that city-dwellers are most at risk on rural roads.

"In reality, that is not the case - country people die on country roads, with about 60 per cent of regional road fatalities involving regional residents", stated Ms Slatter.

Ms Slatter closed by saying “"Our message is that regardless of where you live or where you're driving, stay within the speed limit and drive to the conditions."
