Volkswagen has added a pair of green-focused variants to its European Transporter and Crafter line-ups, extending its BlueMotion technologies into the commercial realm for the first time.

The German giant's Australian arm has also confirmed that both variants are under consideration for Australia, giving the company two of the most miserly commercial vehicles available to fleet buyers.

The Transporter BlueMotion is powered by Volkswagen's 84kW 2.0 litre TDI diesel, adding stop-start, regenerative braking, low rolling-resistant tyres with pressure control and a number of aerodynamic tweaks.

Fuel consumption for the Transporter BlueMotion is listed at 6.3 l/100km - 0.4 l/100km better than the previous "Transporter With BlueMotion Technology," and more than a litre per 100km better than the greenest Transporter option in Australia.

Its carbon emissions are also vastly improved, with the Transporter BlueMotion's 166g/km outstripping the 198g/km of the 2.0 litre turbodiesel Transporter currently offered here.

The short-wheelbase Crafter BlueMotion picks up the same efficiency-focused technologies, with 80 and 100kW version of its new 2.0 litre four-cylinder diesel on offer.

Fuel consumption is listed at 7.0 l/100km for both engine variants, and carbon emissions are down to 184g/km.

Keep an eye on more news of an Australian debut for the new Transporter and Crafter variants.
