A new photo that surfaced online overnight may be our clearest view yet of Volkswagen’s New Midsize Coupe in its coming production form.
Revealed as a concept in Beijing earlier this year, the ‘NMC’ has since appeared in a number of spy photos and renderings over the past few months.
This latest shot, obtained by Chinese website Auto 163, previews the midsized sports sedan ahead of a debut expected to occur early next year.
Described as a four-door coupe, the new model will leap from concept to production with the company’s familiar styling, while the show car’s stepped headlight design has also been smoothed out.
In concept form, Volkswagen described the NMC as being “appreciably wider” than the outgoing large Passat (the new model hadn’t been revealed at that stage), yet shorter in length than the small Jetta.
It’s unclear if the production model will imitate those powerful proportions, although this latest image suggests Volkswagen has downsized the small sedan in every direction.
Early reports suggested the new model, destined for China, would be built on Volkswagen’s older PQ35 platform. New reports this week however claim that the company’s versatile new MQB platform will star.
If the latter is true, we could see the new four-door coupe - a smaller version of Volkswagen’s large CC - introduced in western markets.
The new sedan is expected to make its Chinese-market debut toward the end of 2014.
