Volkswagen has pulled the wraps this week from its new Golf R performance wagon, debuting as a tasty new option for the Golf line.
Expanding well beyond the bounds of the original Mk4 Golf R32 and its successors in the Mk5 and Mk6 lines, this new Mk7 is the first Golf wagon to wear the R badge.
TMR first spied the camouflaged Golf R wagon back in May and, as expected, the new load lugger is driven by the same 221kW and 380Nm 2.0 litre turbo four that powers its ‘regular’ hatch sibling.
Volkswagen promises a 5.1 second 0-100km/h time for the hotted-up six-speed DSG-only (at this stage) wagon, which falls just 0.2 seconds shy of the hatch’s run.
As with the hatch, the Golf R wagon gets a lower sports suspension setup, along with a progressive steering system and the ESC Sport driving mode control.
Likewise, the Golf R wagon follows in the hatch’s footsteps when it comes to styling, wearing the R Design body-kit, bi-xenon headlights, 18-inch alloy wheels and that silver-trimmed grille.
The Golf R wagon goes on sale in Europe next year and, although an Australian debut is not yet locked in, Volkswagen has confirmed with TMR that it’s under consideration.
“At this stage, all I can say is that it is certainly of interest as we think it'd be a good fit within our range,” Volkswagen Australia’s Kurt McGuinness said today.
If the Golf R wagon does come to Australia, an official 'hot weather destination' in Volkswagen's books, expect its power to be dialled down to the same 206kW offered with the hatch.
