Volvo's new Concept 'You' has bowed at this week's Frankfurt Motor Show, marking the latest evolution of its earlier Universe concept.

While exact specifications have not been revealed, Volvo says the Concept You is built on an all-new Scalable Platform Architecture (SPA) and is powered by a new ultra-efficient four-cylinder engine.

“Concept You gives you a good indication of what you can expect from our next large sedan," Volvo CEO Stefan Jacoby said.

"The blend of contemporary Scandinavian design, exquisite craftsmanship and intuitive technology will appeal to luxury car buyers all over the world."

The new Volvo Environmental Architecture engines have been developed to significantly lower fuel consumption and carbon emissions. The engines have also been developed with a view to launching a range of hybrid models.

"We will develop four-cylinder engines with higher performance than today’s six-cylinder units and lower fuel consumption than the current four-cylinder generation," Volvo R&D chief Peter Mertens said.

"It's a bold step to restrict ourselves to four cylinders, but it gives us huge freedom and opportunities in achieving our CO2 targets.

According to Volvo design boss Peter Horbury, feedback from the Concept Universe's Shanghai debut led to You taking on a more coupe-like roofline.

Inside, the Concept You offers the usual motor-show style: costly materials and futuristic ergonomics, along with a fully-digitised centre stack and instrument cluster.

"We used a number of touch screens to replace buttons and controls," Horbury added.

"Smart phones and pads have brought mobile infotainment into the new era. The technology helps us to create a refreshingly uncluttered interior.”

The centre-mounted seats, fixed to the transmission tunnel, have been designed to offer increased under-seat storage. For our money, the most interesting element of the Concept You is its suit-jacket door panels that even include a pen pocket.
