Volvo has used the new XC90 Excellence SUV to showcase its creative ‘Lounge Console’ concept at this week’s Shanghai Auto Show.
Transforming the already comfort-focused four-seat Excellence into a three-seater means that one passenger can enjoy the sort of luxurious travel usually reserved for airborne business-class travellers.
“Removing the passenger seat enabled us to create an open space that dramatically changes the dynamics of the interior and led to a firework of ideas and new possibilities,” Volvo design boss Thomas Ingenlath said.
Volvo makes no secret of the Lounge Console concept’s purpose, focusing on the “unexpressed and unmet needs of people with a high-profile lifestyle”.
Features already offered with the new Excellent model include a relaxed seating position with extended thigh support and a centre console with integrated controls and storage options.
Taking that concept even further with the Lounge Console, Volvo has dropped the front passenger seat in favour of a special console that offers a foot rest, additional storage options and a 17-inch display screen.
The large arms of that display can also swing forward, converting the monitor into a table. Flipping the table’s top backwards reveals more storage, along with a larger mirror for adjusting your tie or re-applying ‘your face’.
Volvo has yet to confirm production plans for the Lounge Console, but there can be little doubt that it has already received expressions of interest for the option.
