Volvo’s XC90 SUV has topped the safety charts for all cars tested in 2015 by the European New Car Assessment Program, Euro NCAP.

The XC90 scored an impressive 97 percent for adult occupant protection and the maximum 100 percent for safety assist technologies.

An overall ‘win’ for 2015 safety testing scores meant the XC90 also topped Euro NCAP’s “large off-roader” class, while the Mercedes-Benz GLC was declared the safest car in the “small off-roader” group.

Other category winners included the Infiniti Q30 as the safest small family car, which was praised for its pedestrian protection score. Two cars not seen in Australian showrooms - the Volkswagen Touran and Ford S-Max - were declared the safest small and large MPVs respectively.

Mazda’s MX-5 was declared the safest roadster of 2015, but Euro NCAP stressed that last year was a disappointing one for improvements in roadster safety with the category-winner only achieving a 4-star safety rating when tested.
